RIMA – MIMIC EU PROJECT

In the MIMIC project, carried out under the RIMA project, we collaborate with Quanta & Qualia, a company from Greece. Together, we’re developing a demo that will show how virtual reality and mobile robotics can be used in the oil, gas and chemical industry for performing inspections and maintenance duties. In the project, we utilise haptic Magos gloves.

RIMA

The global Inspection and Maintenance (I&M) market is estimated to amount to EUR 450 billion. It spans multiple sectors such as energy, oil, gas, water supply, transport, civil engineering and infrastructure. There is massive potential for robotic applications, to increase productivity and improve safety. However, the total market size of robotics is still negligible in relation to the overall market size.

Currently, the EU is a global leader in this rapidly growing field with more than half of all manufacturers of I&M robots based in Europe. Despite this, there is a bottleneck between manufacturers and the market and high potential applications.

RIMA (Robotics for Inspection and Maintenance) is a 4-year project aiming to bridge this gap by establishing a network of 13 Digital Innovation Hubs (DIH) and industry associations to support the uptake of robotics and help small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) to develop novel solutions for different industry sectors.

RIMA is funded by European Union’s Horizon2020 initiative.

Project

MIMIC

MIMIC investigates robotic control and visualisation using virtual reality. A haptic glove is utilised in the control, enabling the user to sense virtual objects on their hand based on haptic feedback. The goal of the one-year-long project is, with the use of virtual reality and a virtual glove, to operate and control a mobile robot with a robotic arm utilising haptic sensors.

The project is implemented in collaboration with Quanta and Qualia, a company from Greece. Quanta & Qualia is an innovative team that aims to become a major player in the future virtual reality market with its haptic glove product.
